Or BIM\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tools which provide virtual and mixed reality <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiences in desktop software or goggles you wear <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on your head on the jobsite. You can gather data just fine, and with as much\u00a0 credibility as these fancy tools. And by the way, the pyramids were built without these tools, so there\u2019s proof that we can get the data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Where are these cheap tools? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re already in your fleet and paid for, or are\u00a0 four miles away at the local hardware store in Aisle H. Here are some basic tools\u00a0 which get the job done:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-104740 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sjcivil.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-03-013336-300x199.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Qualitative or quantitative?<\/strong>\u00a0 These are the two types of data we are collecting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-104741 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sjcivil.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Picture2-281x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"208\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sjcivil.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Picture2-281x300.png 281w, https:\/\/sjcivil.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Picture2.png 448w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Qualitative data shows differences by way of a narrative or by a picture.\u00a0 The painted wall mockup is a good example.\u00a0 For many jobs, the architect wants to see an example of the final product and only after his\/her viewing and touching of the sample can he\/she make the call on whether or not the installation is acceptable.\u00a0 Some architects will also bring out finish comparators which are a collection of rubber placards giving examples of finish roughness (the QR code at left is used in concrete repair roughness).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Quantitative data collects measurements of some sort:\u00a0 a length, a deflection, a volume, a speed, a weight, et cetera.\u00a0 These all result in numbers and facts, not words and opinions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let me give some examples:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-104746 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sjcivil.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/11-300x245.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-104748 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sjcivil.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-03-014209-300x186.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" \/> <b>My story. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article goes hand-in-hand with the field sketch article I wrote. I\u00a0 just can\u2019t emphasize enough the importance of collecting data. Especially if you\u2019re\u00a0 a reader who has an engineering degree \u2013 every guy in the field is expecting you to\u00a0 do this. The owner of the company you work for is expecting that $200,000 degree\u00a0 to have at least brought him a field sketch and a graph showing varying dewatering\u00a0 rates over time (yes, you can plot the flow rate on the y-axis and the date on the x axis and let the data run over time baby!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s more advice \u2013 data\u2019s better than guessing. \u201cThe deflection was pretty big\u201d doesn\u2019t work too well. Now maybe if you\u2019re going to use that agricultural pipe\u00a0 method above you may get some criticism of the measurement being inaccurate;\u00a0 however, it is a start and absent any other means of measuring, it\u2019ll establish a\u00a0 credible estimated basis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having this data allows for jobsite management to make smart decisions and\u00a0 attorneys to have the necessary information to forward a claim on your behalf.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These methods and these tools are simple to use and inexpensive. There\u2019s zero\u00a0 excuse not to gather data to protect your company, protect workers and property,\u00a0 or to better your organization. Young engineers out there go be an engineer, and\u00a0 superintendents go tell your field engineer to do his\/her job!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonus: From the \u201cI\u2019ll say it for the Company Owner\u201d manila file: Employers don\u2019t\u00a0 want to hear the whole \u201cyou should drop the $100,000 on such-n-such tool, it\u2019ll\u00a0 save so much money\u201d. This comment is always made by a person not cutting the\u00a0 check. Yes, it\u2019s true, the tool can save a lot of money, but every owner is thinking,\u00a0 \u201ccan\u2019t we just build it right the first time? Scott listed all the tools you need above\u00a0 which we already have or can be bought with $500.
