Trench Talk 07 – Brad Musick Wastewater Operation

Jul 7, 2026 | Construction, Engineering

Executive summary. A wastewater treatment plant is a complex machine which handles fluids and solids 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Learn the basics – and the not-so-basics – in a quick talk with one of the country’s leaders in wastewater plant operation.

What am I going to learn in this Trench Talk? Put your seatbelt on, as any time you’re sitting with Brad Musick talking about his favorite subject (microbiology and plant operation) you’re attending a clinic in wastewater treatment! In this 30-minute conversation, we just scratch the surface on his knowledge of the subject.

For the past couple months Brad and I have been starting up a 20 MGD treatment facility and his knowledge is endless. From aerobic to anaerobic, and from membrane bioreactor (MBR) to ultraviolet (UV) treatment, this episode will entertain and educate you like no other podcast.

My story. If you consider yourself a professional in wastewater, this talk will only make you better. Brad is a wealth of information and a great teacher. I’ve really enjoyed working with him over the past couple of years.

This Trench Talk has something for everyone — from the beginner who wants the basic steps in the process, to the most experienced engineers who want to dig into nitrites, nitrates, phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, and all the bugs (oops — Brad says engineers and scientists hate that word!) that are the true magic of the process.

Work safe!
